GERMANY: Historic monorail re-opens after fatal accident

Wuppertal : Tuesday, June 08, 1999
The famous Schweberbahn 'Hanging Railway' in Wuppertal is to re-open today 8 weeks after a train fell into the
Schweberbahn Wuppertaler Schweberbahn

river killing a number of passengers and injuring many more.

Repairs to the railway at the point of the accident have been completed and a test train was run satisfactorily early this morning. As a result, it was decided that the railway would start operations again at 1315.

Five people were killed in the accident which occurred to the first train of the day on 12 April, 1999 just outside of the Robert Daum Platz station. The train became derailed and fell 30 feet into the Wupper river below. A metal clamp, left by contractors working on restoring the system has been implicated in the derailment.
