3 Rail workers suspended over Rensselaer derailment.

  : Thursday, July 29, 1999
AmtrakThree Amtrak personnel have been suspended without pay following Saturday's derailment of the eastbound "Lakeshore Limited".
The action came following a investigation which revealed that human error was a contributory factor in the accident which injured 14 people. Amtrak would not give details of any allegations against the employees who will remain suspended pending a formal disciplinary hearing.

Eyewitnesses have stated that the locomotive was going too fast.

The Chicago to New York and Boston "Lakeshore Limited" which was carrying 105 people plus 6 crew was being separated into two different portions one for New York, the other for Boston. A locomotive was attempting to connect to one of these when the incident occurred at about 17:30. Two passenger cars and a cafe car were derailed. Four crew members were among the injured.
