L-3 Communications Wins Locomotive Event Recorder Contract From GE Transportation
Systems
: Tuesday December 14, 1999
L-3 is capitalising on emerging
recorder market for locomotives, ships and military reconnaissance
L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its Electrodynamics business
unit has been awarded a contract by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, PA
to supply integrated event recorders for installation on 9-40 CW locomotives
to be produced for the Norfolk Southern Railway Company.
Norfolk
Southern is a Class I railroad, providing freight transportation in the
Southeastern and Midwest United States. This contract provides event recorders
for 140 locomotives to be produced by GE Transportation Systems in 2000
and facilitates the opportunity for follow-on orders.
"Our
locomotive recorders have proven to be a highly reliable and cost effective
extension of our crash survivable aircraft recorder products," said John
Kravcik, president of L-3 Electrodynamics. "We are pleased that GE Transportation
Systems has once again selected our team to provide the solution for their
locomotive event recorder requirements."
Mr.
Kravcik continued, "It is very clear that the rail transportation market
is moving toward more survivable equipment and we are perfectly positioned
to supply the industry with state-of-the art survivable recorders."
Electrodynamics'
event recorder digitally stores locomotive performance data that can later
be retrieved for mishap analysis and evaluation of locomotive operating
performance for maintenance and planning purposes.
The
event recorder is another area in which L-3 Communications demonstrates
its leadership in aviation recorder technology and expertise. L-3 has supplied
over 45,000 aviation recorders to the industry and is the premier supplier
for aircraft worldwide. In addition, L-3 has introduced state-of-the art
recorder technology for military aircraft, including S/TARTM, a high capacity
solid state recorder designed for the severe environment requirements of
the airborne reconnaissance arena. Another key emerging market is the shipboard
recorder and L-3 is currently pursuing new business opportunities in the
maritime market.
Electrodynamics,
Inc., a subsidiary of L-3 Communications based in Rolling Meadows, IL, provides
safe and arm devices, airborne and locomotive data recorders, elapsed time
indicators and fault indicators to military prime customers and the locomotive
industry.
