Revellers from a Beerfest were killed as they rushed for cover from a sudden downpour of rain. Reports suggest that up to 2000 people tried to cram into the access tunnel to Nemiga underground station in the Belarusian capital Minsk.
The actual number of deaths is unclear. Initial reports indicated that 40 people had been died as a result of the crush. The Health Ministry later however put the death toll at 17. In an interview with a correspondent in Minsk, The BBC World Service said that eyewitnesses have stated that as many as 50 people died. Many more were injured and required treatment in local hospitals. Many of the casualties were teenagers but also included a policeman trying to control the stampede.
The event, which included a rock concert had been organised by a local radio station to celebrate its third anniversary. About 10,000 people attended the event held in a sports stadium.
