French train overuns buffers - 31 injured

: Thursday, May 27, 1999
Thirty-one people have been injured in in the French city of Marseille when the train in which they were travelling hit the buffers in the station.
The accident occurred at about 7.30 am as the the train from Aix-en-Province approached the "end-of-the-line" at Marseille station. The train, carrying commuters into the city was unusually crowded due to industrial action being taken by rail workers. Many of the passengers were standing and fell to the floor when the train hit the buffers at about 6 mph.

The majority of the injured suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

An investigation has been started to discover why the train did not stop before reaching the end of the platform.
