India: 14 dead as Godavari Express derails

Fourteen people were killed when the Godavari Express derailed at about 0315 on 4 June 1999 in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. A further 60 people were injured. Among the casualties was the education minister for Andhra Pradesh - Devineni Venkataramana.
The train was travelling between Visakhapatnam on the coast to Secunderabad. The accident occurred near Kazipet between the stations at Ghanpur and Ippuguda. Twelve carriages from the train left the rails five of which overturned.
The cause of the accident is unknown.
