The accident occurred at Kati about 15 Km from Bamako in the west African state of Mali. Eight carriages rolled down a steep slope towards the advancing freight. The driver of the freight, Minkoro Coulibaly who survived the incident only saw the adavncing carriages when they were about 10 metres away. Many of the carriages were destroyed. All the victims were travelling on the freight train in a vehicle directly behind the locomotive. They are all believed to be employees of the railway.
It is uncertain why the carriages started to roll down the incline. The Malian Railway Board announced that an inquiry would be held.
