Freight train derailment in New South Wales
Robert Wilson : Wednesday September 6, 2000
A freight train derailment yesterday has closed a major rail line servicing the north coast. The line will be closed for up to three days.
A 550m freight train laden with steel coils and sheet metal, was
heading from Port Kembla to Brisbane when the accident occurred 100km
north of Newcastle at 6am. A National Rail Corp spokeswoman said one
of the train's 36 carriages appeared to have jumped the tracks as it
was entering a tunnel between Hilldale and Wallarobba.
She said the derailed carriage was then dragged by the rest of the
train before being driven into the ground. "That then forced another
five carriages to derail inside the tunnel," she said.
