Positive Train Control RFP Released

Association of American Railroads : Friday, February 11, 2000
Released - February 8, 2000

A Request For Proposals (RFP) for the Illinois Positive Train Control (IDOT PTC) project was released yesterday. Positive Train Control is defined as integrated communications and microprocessor-based systems designed to prevent train collisions, incursions of trains into the established work limits of maintenance forces, and operation of trains at speeds greater than authorized.

Issuance of the RFP is part of the process for selecting a System Developer/Integrator (SDI) contractor who will be responsible for developing and testing the PTC system. Responses to the RFP are due to the PTC Program Office at Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI), Pueblo, Colorado, March 24, 2000.

The IDOT PTC system will be installed on a 120-mile segment of a mixed passenger/freight line of the Union Pacific Railroad extending between Mazonia and Springfield, Illinois. This segment is part of a high-speed passenger corridor designated by IDOT and the FRA between Chicago and St. Louis.

Release of the RFP was approved by the Management Committee of the North American Joint Positive Train Control (NAJPTC) program, chaired by Dr. John Samuels of Norfolk Southern Corporation. The NAJPTC is a joint development effort sponsored by the Association of American Railroads (AAR), the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). TTCI, a subsidiary of the AAR, is administering the NAJPTC Program under the direction of the PTC Management Committee.

Requests for a copy of the RFP may be obtained by e-mail to ind_ptc@arinc.com, or downloaded from the NAJPTC web site at http://aarweb.arinc.net/ptc/. An open meeting will be held February 25 at the Sheraton Hotel near Baltimore-Washington Airport for parties interested in responding
