: Monday March 27, 2000
Railtrack has appointed a new director to overseethe implementation of recommendations from recent safety reports.
Former operations director Chris Leah has been appointed Director of Safety. He has thirty-three years experience in the rail industry. The appointment comes in the wake of a number of reports that
have been critical of Railtrack's safety role.
There has been widespread criticism of Railtrack's role of overseeing safety on Britain's rail network. The company owns and maintains the railway infrastructure and doubts have been raised about the company's ability to balance its safety role with the profit motive.
