Southall Disaster Report to be published today
: 24 February 2000
The report of the inquiry into the Southall Disaster is to be published later today.
It is expected that the report will make around 100 recommendations relating to safety improvements. It will also criticise Railtrack and the train operating company Great Western Trains.
The inquiry which was chaired by Professor Uff commenced its deliberations on 20 September 1999 and continued to hear evidence over 33 days.
The accident at Southall occurred on 19 September 1997 when a GWT Inter-City 125 train collide with an empty freight train. Seven people were killed. The inquiry heard that two safety systems on the train were not working.
