Freight trains in head-on collision
: Sunday June 4, 2000
Two freight trains collided in northern Italy early today (June 4) killing 5 people. One other was seriously injured.
The accident occurred at 03:45 (local time) near Solignano on the line between Parma and La Spezia. According to a Ferrovie spokesperson, one of the trains may have failed to stop at a red signal.
Six people, all employees of Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian State Railways) were travelling in the trains. Two were returning to their depot after completing their shifts
This is the third accident to have occurred on the line recently. In October 1999 a freight train collided with a commuter train injuring twenty people. In February this year, two freight trains crashed slighly injuring the drivers.
