The passenger train was the "Ocean" travelling between Montreal and Halifax and carrying 127 passengers and 14 crew. The collision occurred at about 10:15. The train is believed to have hit the freight cars which were standing in a yard at Miramichi in New Brunswick. Two locomotives and five carriages were derailed. The train appears to have entered a siding where the freight cars, containing wood chips were standing. There is no indication of what caused the train to leave the main line. According to a VIA Rail spokesperson, 5 people recieved serious injuries, although none were life threatening. One of the injured was a train crewmember who received serious burns. He had been working in the kitchen. Reports indicate that the remoteness of the area and the terrain, made difficult by snow hampered rescue work. It is understood however that all the injured were transported to hospital.
