HSC chair directs immediate investigation following train derailment at Hertfordshire
Health & Safety Executive : Wednesday October 18, 2000
On behalf of the Health and Safety Commission, the Chair Bill Callaghan, has directed the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to conduct an immediate formal investigation into the circumstances of the train derailment in Hertfordshire yesterday. The investigation will seek to establish the causes of the incident. A report will be published as soon as possible.
As it emerged that the derailment had led to a serious incident involving fatalities Mr Callaghan expressed his sympathy for the injured and relatives of those who have lost their lives.
HSE's HM Railway Inspectorate sent inspectors to the scene to begin an investigation as soon as reports of the incident were received. Inspectors will be starting a detailed investigation alongside the police at first light.
