The South Central Florida Express train, carrying sugar and potash and consisting of 15 cars and 3 locomotives had just left a sugar mill and was heading north when the accident occurred. It is believed that an incorrectly set switch diverted the train onto a siding where the freight cars were standing. The lead engine caught fire in the collision, but the two crewmen were able to get clear. They were later treated for minor injuries. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. South Central Florida Express' rails begin in Fort Pierce, head south around Lake Okeechobee and back north to Sebring, a route that takes it past numerous sugar mills and truck and cattle farms.
