Derailment of Lindsey Oil Terminal to Elland Tank Train
Walkeringham Derailed tank wagons

On 15 February 1982 a derailment of a train of tank wagons occurred near a small township in Lincolnshire called Walkeringham.
The derailment was caused by a hot-box i.e. an overheated bearing on a 100 ton tank wagon. Despite several tanks being ruptured no fire occurred although there was considerable pollution of the adjacent streams. The following photographs show the damage:

In a later incident on the 20th December 1984 at Summit Tunnel a failed bearing did set light to the fuel and the resulting fire burnt through the Christmas Holiday and flames appearing from the ventilation shafts.
