The Eschede Reports
Germany remembers ICE disaster victims
(railtec)
A memorial service was held today (21 June 1998) to remember the passengers who died in the horrific high speed train train crash at Eschede on 3 June 1998. The service was held in the town of Celle in northern Germany and the service was relayed to large TV screens both in the town and in nearby Eschede. At 1059 a minute's silence was observed and Deutsche Bahn asked passengers and staff at its stations to take part.
Germany's President Herzog spoke at the service, which was attended by relatives of the victims, describing the accident as "a modern nightmare".
