- Transportation Head Pushes Rail Safety - (SPRINGFIELD) -- State Transportation Secretary Kirk Brown says as a safety measure, the state should eliminate more street-level rail crossings. During a radio interview, Brown said the fatal Amtrak crash highlights the need for better safety measures. He says his agency has been fighting the opening of new grade crossings, and would like to see more overpasses and underpasses to make it easier for cars to safely avoid trains.

Device Prevents Rail Accidents - (IRVING, Texas) -- An Irving, Texas company says it has a device that could have prevented the deadly Amtrak collision in Bourbonnais (bur-bohn-AY). Integrated Security Systems has developed a new gate designed to keep people from driving around crossing signals. The barrier employs a set of cables that entraps cars that try to beat oncoming trains. The gate has been approved by the Federal Highway Administration, but is currently only in limited use.
