Southall
Were Signal Lights Obscured?

(railtec)
Signals designed to protect trains crossing the main running lines at the Southall accident site may have been obscured by building work. This could have contributed to the cause of the accident in which a Great Western Trains HST struck an empty freight train crossing its path.
This is one of the issues that the adjourned HSE Inquiry will be addressing. Prof. Uff, who is chairing the Inquiry will also be asking about other safety issues such as why AWS (Automatic Warning System) was not working on the HST.
The Automatic Tain Protection System which has been tested by Railtrack was not installed on the main line, although it was available on the new Heathrow Link route.
