BANGKOK, June 27 (Reuters) - Three people were killed and 38 injured when a train plunged into a ravine in Thailand's mountainous northern Phrae province, a provincial police officer said on Saturday.
The train, carrying 300 passengers, skidded off the rail on Friday night while travelling to Bangkok from the northern capital of Chiang Mai.
The officer said the death toll was likely to rise as rugged and difficult terrain hampered rescue operations.
``We are investigating the cause of accident,'' the officer said, adding that the driver survived ``but we had to cut his legs to save him.''
``Of the 38 injured, 24 are in serious condition,'' he said.
The accident caused State Railway of Thailand to cancel several train schedules between Bangkok and northern provinces pending the clearance of the rail. Officials said they expected to resume operations later on Saturday.
