Immingham 1982
Ray State
Class 56 56004 and Class 31 31314 lie in deadly embrace after colliding head-on at Humber Road Junction on the 30th July 1982. The class 56 hauling a coal train overran signals and struck two class 31’s on a tank train carrying petrol on a single lead junction. Fortunately, there was no fire but petrol got into the drains disrupting the nearby town of Immingham for some days.
56004 was repaired and ran again but for 31314 it was the end of the road. It was withdrawn within a few days with sister engine 31192 and sent to the breakers.
